Hey North, you might want to try some ramin shafts.  Call Twig Archery.

Rapor for me too. i just built a dozen Ash and they came out great. A little bit run ouy in a few but not too bad considering that type of wood.

Just got some hickory shafts from Dennis at Hickory Creek.Haven't put em together yet,but they are HEAVY. He said they weighed 600+ and I know the 500 on my reloading scale don't even bobble when I lay em on it!!They are well made,a few little crooks ,but I haven't straightened em yet and I think hickory tends to have a few crooks. I give em a        Just right for a big pig!!

How  heavy of a spine do you need? I have hundreds of shafts left over from when I was doing custom arrows. I saved them and use them for trading for things I need/want. I can even taper them for you if need be.

Like Shawn says, laminated birch will come in heavy, I made a set of 5/16 that had 125gr points and the came in at 700 gr.

how do the various heavy woods act when your trying to taper them? I bought some ash shafts once; and they were so dense that I needed to have a friend use his 'woodchuck' on them. Are any of the heavy woods ..like Ashbys recommended list -laminated birch- soft enough: to allow the use of a simple taper tool?

Brian I have not had good results using the regular blade type tapering tools on hardwoods, except cherry and non-lam birch; but even there the blade needs to be kept sharp. I use a woodchuck for everything now.
