my next bow

Well im in the process of making my third bow. I hoping for a 60 in long bow at about 57 lb@ 30in. This bow will have a 13 in riser made of purple hart and maple.
     I ordered glass and action boo from KENNY M
that arived the day after christmas ( i think he sent it before i ordered it) thanks kenny.
     I have the riser partialy done and now i have limb materials im ready for the next step. I descided to stain the back of the bow purple, i have seen bows that were laminated with purple hart and under the glass it almost seemed black so i was trying to dye the limbs a little lighter so when the glass was applied it would match the purple in the riser.
     I got some purple RIT dye powder and mixed it with 99% isopropanol alcohol. About 3 oz and 1/3 packet of the powder. I descided that two coats would be about right, so i put on the first coat, it looked like my test peice so i was happy so far, but as often happens i had a brain fart and descided to try a grain patteren. I took a q-tip and pulled the end off a little to give me a smaller tip and started making streaks over and over agin down the limb to give it a grain, i then put a second coat over it.
      Well i do think it will work but not sure until i get it layed up in the next couple days.
     I will try to put up some pictures but dial up to photobucket is real slow and im still not sure how to post hopefully this pick will work.

well i got some more picks of my bow that is under one coat of clear getting about done.

    Here is picks of the tips black micarta maple and purple hart.

 

this is the purple stain under glass, its not quite what i was expecting but i still like it.

here is the riser and a knive and sheath i made with leftover scrap from the riser to match the bow.

then  i ran into a problem

On this pick see where the limbs bolt on then i sanded the ends and the riser with a curve that went down into the riser this is the first time i tried this and i desided this after i had layed out the riser and started the cutting ( once agin i had another brain fart). I layed out the riser so when i was done sanding i would have a x in the handle area.

well i desided to try and keep the x although i knew it was going to be small around the grip i descided to try any way

When i drew it back it seemed fine then i shot about 30 arrows though it before i put any clear coat and i noticed a crack on the rest in the purple hart stripe so i put it on my tillering tree drawn back to 20 in and poured thin super glue down in the crack. At this time i also traped the limbs and rounded the edges to nock of the last 4 or 5 pounds then i cleared and waited.    
      The first time i drew it back i herd pop and looked and it cracked next to the same spot.

 


this pick might show that infront of the crack you might see a thin black line in the purple stripe that is the super glue from the first time it cracked.

I descided to once agin to put it in the tillering tree and this time i drew it back to 28 and poured more super glue in it this time you could see tiny tiny air bubbles coming out. I kept filling it with s/g untill it quit bubbling then left it there, i was on my way to town so i figuared it will be good to go or broke when i get home. It took me about 15 min and i litteraly grabed the door handle when we heard crack come from the basement and sure enough this is what i ended up with

The limbs seem fine and i have plenty materials so i gess its back to the dungen i mean basement to put another riser and make a post when i get it done.  thanks guys

Keep in mind that the purpleheart will change colors over time.  I think it's supposed to darken and take more of a brown tone?

DANG!! Hate to see that Scott!

How small was the throat of the grip? Unusual with that many lams to break like that! Most try to keep 1.75" back to belly in the grip.

Sure was a purty bow!(will be again)

The grip was about 1 1/8 i knew i had a 90% chance it would break but i was already  that far along so i tried it.. live and learn.. im still at the bottem end of the learning curve..
