Tony,

Crash is on his way home and will chime in with his input.  We are going to wait on the tips until he has time to do them.  Remember this is not us doing this work.  Crash is a rookie to this type of handle.  He has done a couple of our blanks and a selfbow.

Want to let everyone know how easy it is to do this.

Well while talking to Mike and Jason about a different project,Mike says to me hey jason you were a little overwhelmed by the handle on the GBB werent you ?  And i said you arent kidding im am so he laughed a little and said how about doing a build along with me and Jason i said sure and about fifteen minutes later i was in the barn with a four in hand in my hands. I think mike wanted me to do it cause im a little slow when it comes to working wood in fact his words were if you can do it any one could do it.  Well come to find out he was right the blank is so close to done that a child really could do it all it takes is a little common sense and a little reading of this thread .
what is really nice about what they have done is that the handle already feels real nice in the hand all that is needed is a little raspin and sanding of tool marks left from the bigboy tools they use, that they still dont let me touch. The shelf cut out needs to be thinned just a little and a radius put on it thats probably the trickiest part and if you think about what you are trying to accomplish its really not that difficult at all . All in all I believe I spent about an hour doing the handle up to this stage but most of that was Mike making sure that I went the correct way with the glass. This blank really does make it easy to have a good performing glass bow without paying an arm and a leg plus you get to have a couple good hours of fun in the shop getting her built.
Please god let me live just more day in the woods.

Thanks guys!!  Crash is right, even though he has a fear of messing it up.  The bow is nearly a done deal when you get it.  A little clean up and shaping and your shooting the bow and sanding for finish.

Crash will take you through the hand tool tip work on Saturday and we'll get it ready to sand and put on some finish.

Been out of pocket for a couple of days, glad to get back in time to see this. This blank just looks to easy. I'm sure just about anyone can do it with a minimal amount of talent say someone like me. I can't wait to get one and give it a try, but uncle sam comes first to the tune of to many pecos. Waiting for the finish now and to see the finished bow.

Recurve?  What recurve.  Did I miss something Roy?

LOL

Jason is messing with glass.  Dang stuff just makes me itch.  It is a fine shooting bow though.

We finally took the pics of the tips work.  I'll try and get em up this am.

Here we go!!

Tips 101 with hand tools. . .LOL

Tools required:  Vice, flexible rasp(strip of sanding belt), round file, sanding block, nock file.

Step 1:

put bow in vice belly side up

With the sanding block cut a rounded taper from belly to tip as shown

Should look like this when done:

Now mark a line on the bow 4" up from the end

With the sanding block cut a facet tapering to the line like this

Do the other side the same way

Roll the bow over in the vice so that it looks like this:

Use the flexible rasp to round the overlay with a shoeshine motion

Use pressure on the trailing and leading edge of the sanding belt to keep it from jumping onto the limb.  BE CAREFUL!!

use the flexible rasp to smooth and blend  the lines

Use your nock file or chainsaw file to bring the nocks up onto the overlay.  Make sure they are straight and matched side to side.

Now extend the line of the nock up and over the overlay.  I don't like a square line here so I extend towards the tip a bit to get the round line.
