snakeskin backing

does a snakeskin backing have the same effect as linen or is it just for looks?

Yes, just for looks however some snakes like pythons, boas and eastern diamond back rattlers have tough skins that will give some protection. If you need protection you can always put the skins over linen, silk or rawhide.
