Osage/walnut T/D longbow
« on: May 03, 2009, 09:25:00 PM »
Finially finished.  This project has been going on for a while, thought you guys would like to check out the finished product.

I obtained a couple crooked billets from an old osage tree a friend of mine cut down.  This was my first attempt working with Osage and I had the idea of making a T/D with a short block of walnut I had.  The limbs were cut side by side from the same billet and are equally as crooked.  It worked and it shoots quite well, the dificult part was getting them set up on the riser so that the string bisects the grip.

Final specs,
-Around 50# @ 28".
-70" ntn, 14" riser, 1 5/8 limbs at the widest point
-I used Santos Mahagony for the overlays. and Santos plus maple for the thumbrest overlay
-Rawhide backing, finished with TB epoxy, brass t/d kit and a cowhide rest.

That is a one of a kind bow but one that you should be proud of.  Love the way the rawhide looks on the back.
Did you drill all the way through the limbs to for the alinement pin holes?

I did not drill all the way through.  I drilled the bolt holes, then attached the limbs.  I kept the riser wide so that i could mark where the limbs would optimally end up, using a taught piece of twine strung on the tips to see where it would bisect the handle.....marked the outline of the limbs on the sire, measured in on both sides and drilled.  Maybe a little lucky too..

Very cool bow. You did a good job lining up the limbs and the character of the back profile really sets this bow above others.
