I have been making some kid bows out of red oak and hickory. 48 inches at about 1/4 inch thick. 1 1/2 inch wide riser 7 inches long tapered to 3/8 inch at tips. I glue a 7 inch block of solid wood or laminate some pieces together about 3/4 thick for the riser. They are inexpensive and seem to work great.
