Im planning on making a bamboo backed osage selfbow, and am looking for ideas.

I'm working on one now that is gonna be a beauty!  Osage riser with osage limbs and bamboo core.  Walnut accents really set it off!

Tips for a new bowyer:

Dont be afraid to start

Dont be afraid to make mistakes and then learn from it

Process matters more than product

Be patient

Consider and understand what you do, particularly if it comes as advice from others

Thanks Kenny, my boys are the reason I started building bows. I don't know whose smile was bigger, his or mine when he finally got his bow.

Hopefully I can continue to spread the joy of archery.

I second exactly what DCM said, if you are a little leary of messing up your osage stave, especially if you paid good money for it and it's your only one, i would suggest building a board bow of hickory, oak, ash, ipe, you name it. The experience you will gain from tillering a board bow will be priceless when you start on your osage bow.

Now if you have a good supply of osage, then just dive right in.

quick note: a bamboo backed osage bow wouldn't be a "selfbow" it would be a, well...bamboo backed osage. A selfbow is exactly how it sounds, one solid piece of wood, all by its "self".

No backed bows I do love OSAGE! There is one white wood bow towards the center.

I'm in the process of building a couple more.  Allan built the bottom recurve, my bows are not that purdy.
