A little help needed w/ a kids bow
« on: July 23, 2009, 09:24:00 AM »
I was given this kids bow last night, it's in good shape but I wanted to spruce it up and give it away at a upcoming youth day.

it's 47-3/4" and 46" string groove to string groove.

I was going to install a dual shelf, new grip, and have a string made up.

Here's my question someone drilled a small hole in the top tip. Should I fill it with CA or Tite Bond with some sawdust? Or should I overlay something over the tips to reinforce them since this is a kids bow?

Nice looking little bow.  I drill a 1/16" hole in the tips of all my bows to hang them up when spraying a finish on them.  I drill mine side to side though, not back to belly.

I doubt it will hurt anything but if you wanted to cover it tip overlays would work.  They will just require a little more work to get shaped after they are glued on.  Or like you mentioned fill with glue.  That would be the easiest and wouldn't require reworking the tips.

Since the hole is beyond where the string rests at the tip I don't think it will structurally hurt the bow in and of itself.  But I guess it could give an avenue for splitting to start if the tip gets whacked, as often happens with kids bows.

I'm sure someone with a lot more experience will chime in soon so take my advice for what it's worth.  Good luck.

Hey Drew, Aaron summed it up. It's above the groove so it will not hurt anything. I would atleast fill it with glue of some kind(tblll) and then put your finish on. good luck.

I drill the top tip as well for finishing, but use the hole for a string keeper. just twist up as you would a flemish twist string, feed it through the hole, snug it up and tie a knot that won't slip back through.

It's for a string keeper as Dano said.  It won't hurt anything if you leave it.
