A tab or a glove will help protect your fingers from nerve damage too. I shoot with a Martin deer skin glove.

When a good glove breaks in, you can feel the string. The tabs always felt too thick and I never used them enough to break one in.
Get an old, worn-in glove from a friend and try it.
