Short Osage Bow completed
« on: August 12, 2009, 10:15:00 AM »
I am always surprised how little osage it takes to make a bow. This stave was only 52" long to begin with, and it had a good sized knot in the middle. The knot kinda made up my mind for a semi-bendy handled bow. The bow came out 50" NtN 50# @ 26" as you can see I had to flip the tips a tad to get a better string angle, this thing really stacked badly before that. The limbs are 1 1/8" wide tappered to 1/2" nocks. I still have some skins to put on and some finish, and some kind of handle wrap.
Here's the handle

Don't be afraid to try them short osage bows! In the eariy '90s, a gentleman was at Cloverdale showing off his 50" D- bow, full of pin knots. He had made like 4 bows of various lengths, from the same piece of wood. The wild thing was, he was pulling a full length alum. 2117 arrow in it! I kid you not. Norm Blaker, from Michigan, the great knapper, has pictures! This gentleman let me draw it, and kept hollering "puller' back", I only draw 26". I wish I had a picture! He also said, he had learned to make them from a book he found in his grandma's attic. Good shootin, Steve

Dad gone, I would have been scared to death to try to build over that knot.  Great job, and great tiller as usual.

Great story Steve, wish I had been there.

Mark, that's why I left so much wood around the knot, and it gave me a nice little palm swell. The nice thing is, if it breaks, it will warm me some winters eve.
