Glueing up risers
« on: September 04, 2009, 11:36:00 PM »
Just a quick question for you all, if you're going to use multiple woods in your riser, what kind of glue do you use?  2 ton Epoxy?  SmoothOn?  Something else?

Hoping it's epoxy as I can get it locally.

I use AreoMarine 400 for all my glue up's, it's stronger than Smooth On and 1/2 the price.

Bow grip failed me the only time I used it.  I've used smooth-on since, with not a problem.

I use SmoothOn for everything including tip overlays, riser lams, and limb butt overlays.

Shawn told me smooth on bud. It'd make sense too as it'd keep everything on the bow one type of glue and you won't have compatibility issues.

I have used Aeromarine 400 in one experimental bow with no problems in the glue lines, but smooth on has never failed me in dozens of bows, the aeromarine is a lot thinner than smooth on, in the oven it would likely run out of small cracks, leaving a gap, whereas smooth on will fill a slight gap.

For an all wood bow that isn't to be heated in a hot box then Titebond 3, but for a fiberglass laminated bow or one to be heated above 150 degrees in the hotbox then an epoxy based glue designed for curing at higher temps should be considered.

I don't get where Aeromarine is half the price. Someone flunked math class.  25 bucks for the two pint kit...versus 30 bucks for the same amount of smooth on at 3 Rivers?  I will stick with the tried and true...SMOOTH ON for not only risers and glue ups but limb tip overlays as well.
I humbly follow in the learned footsteps of those who precede me.
