Carp Skins

Anyone got any tips for curing and setting them on limbs?

Primitive archer had an article a few years back. Pretty much like a snake if I remember right.

I've cured my skins like I would a snake but they just aint real pretty like I've seen on others bow's.

I wonder if you got to have a certain kind of carp?

Grass carp are the ones that really look good.

I got a pair of carp skins from Timo but haven't used them yet. I believe Tim told me that the skins will look better on the bow than off...except on the fish.

My brother spear fished him from the Ohio River.

This is not the carp I skinned But it is the same kind. What kind of carp is this?

That is a smallmouth buffalo, one of our native suckers. I am not sure what they would look like on a bow, they are pretty bland when compared to grass carp. I have never tried them.

I think the large scale pattern should give you a good effect on a bow back. You can always add color to the wood beneath the skins to highlight them.

Grass carp are stocked to control vegetation in ponds and have the tendency to flush out downstream during high water. Here is Kansas they end up in the federal reservoirs where they can get 30-60 pounds. In Rivers they typically do not get as big and are limited by the amount of backwater areas.

Grass carp are one of the introduced species that were to solve our problems but in turn created more. I know they have been used in Ohio by managers. Your best bet may be to contact DNR bio there and see if they can point you in the right direction.
