Man, this is crazy, I was wondering the same thing laty night and got a hit on your question when I searched on it.  Adding my voice to the chorus asking the question: "can actionwood risers be stained to make them darker"?

You go over to the bows section in the classifieds, you'll see a Whippen Stick I have for trade.  Now I knew it was ugly when I bought it, but then some other guys told me it was ugly too.  Soooo if nobody wants it, I'll keep it and take the grip down a bit to fit my hand better.  While I've got the finish off the riser, I'm thinking of dying or staining that brown and tan actionwood riser all black and keeping the red accent stripe just like it is.  I've been looking at stains and dyes from General Finishes or HL Behlen, but I've got to check the TG knowledge base first!

Ive stained action boo with denatured alchohol and rit dye several times with good results. Cheap and effective.  Mix it how you want it and go. The alch. dries quick, glues up good. Made a bow for my son and cammoed the limbs. Used it on cedar arrows as well. Just get the color the way you want it on a test pc first and your good to go.

Back when I used actionwood for risers I often ordered the natural, it was a little cheaper.  I used aniline dyes to dye whatever color I wanted.  

The only disadvantage it the dye only penetrates so far, a bad scratch will reveal the color underneath.
