Reshaping bow handle

I have a bow that I love the way it shoots but can't get used to the grip. I would like to reshape the grip. How would you experts reshape this grip to be a little flatter. It has a large palm swell. Is that the right term? Also, how would you refinish it to match the rest of the bow? Thanks

Use a four in one rasp and sand paper to reshape it to fit your hand, that's what I use on the bows I have done to fit me. Looks like you could use tru oil to finish it and it would match up real good.

How do I keep from splintering the lower limb belly? Just work up from there, never stroke down?

Yep,work towards the riser wood, never into the glass. Even a spindle sander into glass with coarse paper can catch and tear the fibers.

Greg, another option would be to fill in the deep area with some leather and build it up and feather it as you go. then wrap the area once you get what you want. You can always remove wood in addition or later if you don't like what you get.

I have thought of this. Thanks for the input. I need to get some leather and see if I can make a grip. If I get it tight enough it should hold and also should allow the bow to mold to my hand as it is drawn. I have thought also of using inner tube rubber to build a filler. I'd just contact cement the rubber togeher then shape it then put a leather handle over it. I will find some leather and try. Its better than ruining a beautiful bow.
