giraffe bone and ivory?
« on: January 14, 2010, 08:31:00 PM »
Anybody familiar with using giraffe bone or ivory for tips? I have been given some and would love to use it, just not shure of durability. I'm shure the stuff will outlive me, just not shure how well it will bond to the fiberglass.

thanks,bigjim

I've used cow bone on a couple of bows for tips.  Works great, but is brittle.  Don't drop the bow on the tip, or it will break.  I've got some ivory, but haven't gotten my nerve up enough to use it.   :)

I've got vegetable ivory on my shrew hawk handle I made and its taken a drop or two and seems to be holding up fine. Rumor has it that there similar in composition, so similar that once worked most people can't tell the differance. I say use it and tell us how it works out

The thin ivory overlays I have on a couple bow tips is still stuck real nice and the stuff is nearly as hard as glass but not that brittle. I think it is good stuff and plan to use it on every bow i ever make as one signature. Jim

I've found out that alot of the bone is available stabilized. I'm going to contact the suplier and see what they say about it. Stabilizing should make it much tougher and more shock resistant.

Bob Sarrels uses some bone on his tips.  Hes in the sponsors and a fine gentleman to bend his ear a little.
