I have been trying to build a 48 inch longbow. How long of string would I need for this bow?

If you are making your own strings, it's trial and error till you figure it out. If you are going to buy one, 44 would be my guess.

A 48 inch longbow sounds kinda short for a longbow:)

It depends on what the brace height is supposed to be for the bow, but in my experiences 4" shorter for a recurve and 3" shorter on a longbow.

Yeah, 3" shorter for lb. That makes 45" string.
