Here is what I learned about exotic wood.
1. Exotic wood comes in on big boats to big ports like NY, Philadelphia, Norfolk.
2. Brokers will only sell big loads of same species.
3. Next level buys bundles and breaks them down.
4. chains like Rockler buy loads and split them between their stores. Price climbs.
5. There are companies that buy lots of big loads of many species but they are near the ports. I found them on the internet and guess where they are? Near ny,phili, norfolk.
I was in the Philadelphia area for a wedding and made it to Mike W. Quinn Hardwoods in Yardley Pa.
He had over six outbuildings behind his sawmill.
Each building had a few of those big loads. 4/4 & 8/4. I came out with bloodwood, santos mahogany, wenge, yellow heart, teak, zebra, rosewood....at a fraction of the price at chains.
But gas and travel makes it a wash, except for the opportunity to pick your own. Next trip I'm takin the trailer instead of the wife.
