I second the carpet tube. I got one from lowes  for free and cut it in pieces for shipping. They are strong and lightweight. Don't forget the insurance.

I use PVC pipes to ship bows. For most straight limb or R/D bows 3" to 4" thin walled PVC works well and is strong and light. I use slide on caps or the temporary PVC caps and lots of padding shipping tape. I have seen bows shipped in two of the triangular boxes spliced together to make a long box but have never tried it. Check out USPS.com for size, shape and weight regs and make your shipping container as close to their description. Odd shaped packages are charged more.
Also when I ship a bow it is USPS, PRIORITY with Delivery Confirmation. Trying to get any shipper to pay for a damaged bow is difficult because you have to prove it's value to them even if they take your money for insurance. By shipping USPS priority with delivery confirmation fewer people handle the package in route and you can trace it if it is lost.

Add me to the list- I shoot a 45-55# @ 27" right handed. I'll be building a glass bow- most likely a RD longbow.

You can get most recurves into a 5" PVC tube, especially if you string it partially to lessen the bend.  Make sure your overall dimensions (length and girth) are less than 84" and you'll avoid domestic balloon charges.  A bow should not cost more than $20 to ship domestically, even with insurance.  But since you won't have a bill of sale in this case, trying to collect on insurance will be difficult.
Take a kid hunting!

I have heard from many people that getting anyone to pay up on insurance claims is difficult, but for only a couple bucks to me it is a no brainer. At least with it you have a chance to recoup your losses instead of being left with your you know what in hand and nothin else to show for it.

I use PVC tubes and use USPS, Priority with Delivery Confirmation to ship any bows I send out. Check out the USPS website for size, shape and weight restrictions and shipping costs. I don't insure any bows I send because proving their value to the USPS is almost impossible so generally coverage is iffy. The USPS has never lost or severely damaged any bows I've shipped out through them.

Ok, thanks for the shipping help, does it usually cost like $10 or less through usps priority? I calculated around $7.

Glad I checked the message board today!!  I'm in!  I've only made 4 bows so far but I'm proud of every one of them.

I shoot 45-50# RH (and I'm short, 65"tall)  :(

I'll make a wood self bow most likely backed with one of the million timber rattlers here in SE Georgia.

Put me in. I would like a 45-55 @27" RH. I'll be building a selfbow. Possibly whiteoak or osage. This is a great idea.   I would prefer a selfbow of some sort but like Pat B said beggars can't be chosy.
