...a little further along in the process.  I got the stave to floor tiller stage and now it's time to put some heat to it to remove the twists, straighten out the limb and add some backset.
  I start by clamping the stave handle to the form. There is some deflex right at the fade I want to reduce.

  I start by oiling the wood well with veg oil. I will concentrate the heat near the fade. This area is thicker so it will take longer for the heat to sink in. After an initial heating I wrap the heated area in alum foil to hold the heat while it sinks in. I then reheat and begin clamping, slowly with repeated heatings until I'm satisfied. I know it wouldn't go all the way down so I didn't force it.

Now it's time to work on the twists. For this I use wedges along with the clamps to direct the twist the other way
 
  you can see the clamps where they need to be to correct the twist and a wedge to assist.
 

This is what the limb looked like to start with. You can see where I oiled the limb near the fade area.
 
  I'll post pics of the results tomorrow when it comes out of the clamps.

This is a view of the other limb before any manipulation. It has a nice twist also. This limb also has some pronounced knots on the back that will have to be dealt with as I clamp and heat it. More wedges and a few spacers along with the clamps will help with this limb.

I took the clamps off this morning. Here is what the first limb looks like. I will have more straightening to do as I go along but am pleased with the results of the first straightening session.
 
 
  Now, the second limb is clamped to the form. You can see the deflex and twists. Not as bad as the first but with different issues. This limb has pronounced knots on the back so spacers and wedges are needed to control the direction and still prevent damage to these knots.
 
 
And here it is heated and clamped the form. I worked on this early enough today and my basement is cool enough that I will remove the clamps later this afternoon.
