Putting tip overlays on Osage.
« on: February 28, 2010, 11:22:00 AM »
Ive been pondering doing some tip overlays on a few bows in the future.

One method i think will look great is to do the leather soaked in CA in layers of differnt color leather.

Another method I've considered and have a question about and I think I already know the answer but want some input on is....

Can I bevel the back at the tips on an osage self bow or BBO to create a flat gluing surface or will this compromise the strength of the bow at the tips since I would be violating the ring or boo at the tips? I would be putting on a block overlay and shaping.

Is this a no no or a go go?

I know I ca place sand paper over the tip and sand the overlay to fit but would it be okay to do it the other way?

Kris, I flatten the area where the overlay goes and match the two gluing surfaces. Generally the tips are stiff and the likelihood of it lifting a splinter are slim. Try to keep the end of the overlay over the ground area on the back of the bow. I generally feather that end of the overlay beforehand to keep from messing up the bows back while shaping the tips and overlays later.
Make the most of all that comes and the least of all that goes!
