Bamboo Bow Help
« on: March 08, 2010, 06:14:00 PM »
Need some input on working horn softening, forming, etc.  gemsbock horn in this case.  Am intending to add to belly of bamboo bow to splint hinge, approx. 2 1/2" off fades on inner limb.  Worst case seniorita.  Any and all feedback on how to form, shape horn with wet heat or dry appreciated.

This might have what you're looking for.
It forms easily with dry heat, steam, or boiling,

I am in the process of finishing a horn belly sinew backed short Holm-gard style bow.  John's tutorial is very helpful.

I tried the same process with cow horn once for use in an arm guard. The thinner areas peel up in layers, but the thicker areas flatten o.k.
