new caul for d/r selfbows (video update)
« on: March 13, 2010, 09:06:00 PM »
I spent the rainy day today working on a new caul and then my friend and I tested itout on a selfbow he had ready to heat. I  like the resultsandwill call it a keeper for now. [IMG]

That sure looks good! I'd love to see the finished bow after you get her strung up and shooting awhile.

me too. I don't know what it is going to look like after it takes a little set. This bow ended up with  1½ in. reflex. Meaning that when it sits back to the floor, the handle is off the ground 1½.
any thoughts on the form? I  will bring it to ojam if anyone else would like to try it.

OJAM is too far for me.
I would be interested as to how you got that shape drawn on the board to cut out your caul. I can never get each sides curves exactly the same and the shapes in design are endless in possibilities.
It looks as though you can still get a bit longer stave on your caul. Do ya think a longer stave on this caul will provide even more reflex than the stave pictured here @ 1 1/2"?

Sure David bring that sucker to Ojam, I'm sure there will be some guys wanting to shape bows with the caul.

Hey Dave, Man that looks good.  I'd love to use it on my next bow. When are you guys headed out for OJAM? Jeff

this form was made freehand. A friend of mine, chris, helped me, we kinda just drew some curves and then corrected until we liked it. I always nake my cauls a bit longer, and yes, a longer bow would probably have more reflex because of the excellerated curves on the ends.
jd, I definitely will. You helped a friend of mine work a stave I gave him at mojam this past year and he says thank you.
I will definitely have some pics of it being used.
jeff- chris and I are leaving on thursday afternoon or evening. You still thinking on going? If you are, I will ask chris if we have room in his truck and we can all ride together.

thanks for all the input everyone.

this one came outa bit different. Less deflex, and morereflex. This  was longer and had has 2 3/4 in of reflex.  I want to give them a little time  after heating to stabilize, but chris is working on his. I will post some pics when I get them. I want to see it to.
