Crack in takedown riser - Can it be fixed?
« on: March 18, 2010, 12:40:00 PM »
I have a Sovereign Ballistik 55#@30". I shot it yesterday for the first time in several weeks. When I went to put it away I noticed this crack in the laminations on the riser. I did not hear, feel or otherwise notice anything during my shooting.

Can this be fixed?

Does the crack in the shelf go past the accent stripe? Got a picture showing the shelf crack from the side?
If all the cracking is  on 1 side of the accent that whole piece can be removed and replaced.
Have you talked to the Bowyer?

Pete;
The crack seems to be contained in the boundary of the accent stripe. It looks like the top 1/4 to 1/3 of the lamination of the belly side of the riser to the accent wave has delaminated/cracked. As the first photo shows that part of the riser is shifted to one side slightly. With a pretty strong pressure I can push it back to be flush with the rest of the riser.

I have not talked with the bowyer. I do not know if Sovereign archery is still in business or not. If anyone knows, and has contact information it would be greatly appreciated.

Here are some more photos.

More of the riser and the belly piece and accent stripe.

The crack from the riser side opposite the shelf. It goes all the way thru the riser (side to side) and down to just before the shelf. It seems to mostly be the thin accent stripe from the wave lamination.

Thats not a crack, thats a glue failure and from the looks of it, its due to glue starvation at the joint.  More chances than not, the wood will give way before the glue joint which is not the case here.

I'd contact the Soveriegn and get there opinion, even if its out of warranty.

I had a T/D limb separate at a wedge on an accent strip one time.  The strip itself delaminated, but the glue line held.  Your riser is an odd place to seperate as there isn't a lot of stress on that joint.I too would first call Sovereign as it appears to be a bowyer issue.  If they aren't/can't stand behind it you can fix it with a good brand of water thin cyanoacrylate glue.  Put a generous amount in the crack so that it soaks all the way through.  Place a clamp on it and after the crack is tight run another bead or two from either side of the crack until it stops wicking in.  I have yet to have anything come apart after doing it this way.  You will have to sand the glue area and refinish to clean things up.

I was asking about the crack I see in the corner of the side plate and shelf in the top photo running belly to back.  Got a picture of this area? how far does this crack run?

Boy Pete, you have good eyes. I was all set this morning to reply that there wasn't a crack there. That it must be some type of shadow. I came home tonight and really examined that area. Sure enough there is very fine crack there. It runs from the middle of the strike plate over to the belly of the bow. It angles about halfway out on the shelf from the where it started. It is visible on the belly of the riser grip and extends down about 1".

I read on another site that Soveriegn Archery is no longer operating. The bowyer is having some health problems.

Thoughts on what can be done with this? Can it be dosed with Loctite 420? Or does/can that belly part of the riser be removed and a new part made? If that kind of work is needed, any suggestions of who does that kind of work?

Thanks in advance for any advice and opinions.

Jeff

I have seen a bunch of that type of crack. LOL
Remove the section and replace it.
Look real close to make sure it does not go past the accent stripes. Get good light.
I would not trust a repair  here. It needs to be cut out and replaced.
These type of cracks are comon from a dry fire, but it can be from many other reasons.
I would not trust it to a simple glue fix. That is a big piece of wood to hit you in the skull at warp speed.

John Fazzio still advertises in Trad. Bowhunter mag., he should have some type of warranty on material failure. 505-772-5219.. but yes,...he may have gone underground.
