Last 2 T.D.'s I've made.
« on: March 20, 2010, 01:53:00 PM »
I've made these in the last couple of years. The sleeve handle in selfwood Osage 50#@28,and the hinge handle is Bamboo/Osage,55#@28. The grip on this one you just unlace like a shoelace.I really don't like the rubber grips so I came up with this, the leather is cemented on down to the seam. I used Feibings leather dye for the sunburst finish on both.   [IMG]

I'd like to learn to do that sunburst finish, you should be proud.

Both bows are absolutely beautiful. I cut up some hickory staves a few weeks ago and got a few billets so I've been thinking about making a TD. Can you get a sunburst finish with regular wood stain? Great job!

Thanks fellas. Ryan,I've never tried it with wood stain. You can get the leather dye from Tandy Leather. Don't get the water-based. I've used it on Hickory. I would go with Medium Brown and Cordovan. Lay down the lighter color first over the whole bow and then the darker color on the handle thru the fade-outs and the tips. You can blend everything in with 0000 steel wool and your lighter color[med brown]rag.Steel wool heavily in the mid limb area. Play around on some scrap wood first to get the hang of it.

Awesome bows!!!

I've always thought a well done two piece takedown doesn't look like a take down, and yours don't.  Well done indeed!

It's a Grenier style hinge. They were popular in the 1940's.Ted Fry @ Raptor Archery had afew of them in-stock the last time I ordered. Their stable if you install them correctly. If your interested, call Ted and he can walk you thru it.
