Dang Brad, you did a great job on that one. That overlay really looks cool.

BTW how do you calculate the stack on your short recurve bows ? Is it all experience or do you have some sort of table ?

Andy, I take finished thickness measurments from similar bows as well as compare my estimate to other bows I've made.  I do have tables but they are simply Binghams tables (or interpolations of them).  At the end of the day its an educated guess, and with a little luck it comes out at the desired weight.  But as you can see it doesnt always work (like this one being 15# off).

That overlay looks cool.  Kind of like file work on the spine of a knife blade.

Ha, yeah send it over Sulphur.  Thanks for the comments.  You know that greybark recurve was one of my favorites too.  Everytime I learned something new I went back and reworked that bow.  thinner tips...smaller handle, radius shelf, lower shelf, overlays on the front..i reworked it several times...here is a pic of it now and it belows to a friend of mine who is just getting into trad archery.

I dont think it is that much heavier.  It is certainly lighter than cocobolo, purpleheart or bocote.  This 46" bow is light as a feather and its basically solid actionwood.  Comparatively, I would say it weighs somewhere between hard maple and cocobolo.

Got the Herters 46 all finished up and ready to shoot.  Here are some final pics.  I'm looking forward to making another one of these.
