Wow.  The finish work on those bows is extraordinary.  Great job.

What kind of backing is on the first bow?

Just stunning bows.
My first thought on the farm country picture was, "That is coyote calling country!"  Pretty background.

holy crap, eh.

so another guy who posts on hear, Moen, told me that ash doesn't like dry heat.  Guess it varies from species to species.  He's in Norway, and uses a different kind of ash, i imagine.  I've got a bunch of ash staves on the go, all cut from a 1x6.  They are all going to be elb style, as earlier this year i saw dozens of rift sawn white ash bows made in this style.  They were all very taut, high weight, and solid.

So, heat treat, eh????

have you made deep-cored bows of ash?

When you heat treat, do you apply a varnish, the way marc st louis talks about?  I did that several times last year on flatbows made of white oak, and overall the effect of heat treating them was very good.  I see you have really cooked the snot out of yours.  How thick was it when you cooked it, how much came off when you tillered it, did you tiller it before tempering it, and the obvious question:  did you temper the belly wood before applying the hickory backing strip?
