Board Bow #2(finished)AND BROKE
« on: April 03, 2010, 06:28:00 PM »
Red Oak board from Lowe's. By the time I got the tiller pretty close it had got a little lighter than I wanted ,was hoping for 45lbs. So I tried heat treating the belly but only picked up a couple of pounds. I think it may of helped cast some though. Shoots pretty good. 64 1/2" ntn 40lbs@26" Ended up with 1 1/4" string follow when first unstrung. Still need to put a finish on it but am going to shoot it a little more first.

Went to shoot it yesterday and was short drawing it to get it to bending, about the time I got to full draw I heard a TICK!!! I found a crack on lower limb at a small pin knot I had been worried about .It was close to the edge of the limb and I did not see it until I had the bow trimmed out but decided to try it any way.

I wonder if that piece of hickory is dry yet?

Oops! I had a hickory board bow break because of the same reason. A tiny pin knot that I missed while picking out the board. Oh well. make another one. Jawge

I made and broke several oak board bows before I made an osage bow from a stave at TBOF. Get your self an osage stave/blank and you will never look back.  Good luck!
