Bow for a Buddy...
« on: April 16, 2010, 10:57:00 AM »
A buddy of mine was in a archery class with me last semester. Needless to say I tried to convert him to hunting traditional the entire time. I have only been hunting this way for a year now but I figured that I should try and get more involved in the sport. So I told him that the first traditional bow that I hunted with was a long bow I made for myself this past summer. He liked the idea of traditional hunting so he asked if I could make him a bow to his specifications. I told him that it was no problem but I had only built one bow before so I wasn't going to promise anything.
So I ordered most of my materials for the bow from Kenny M. (By the way he is the best guy to work with especially when you are not a professional. He really knows his stuff.) The materials arrived and I was ready to get started. It took me from Christmas to last weekend to get it completely finished but I was happy with the result and timing since I am a full time student only able to work on the weekend. I am hope that this summer I can get some more orders so I can pay for next semesters books too!
The bow is r/d and is composed of walnut limbs, clear glass, osage, and walnut accent strips, and cocobolo riser and tips are from a 4 pt. I killed this past season. It draws 48# and 28" and is a sweet shooter... now I wish it was mine but I can always make another for my self. By the way I was extremely happy with the results. Enjoy the pics.

Wow does that look nice.  I'm building my first bow right now and have a quick question for you.  I like the looks of cocobolo a lot (for future bows), but have heard it's rather oily and can take some extra work.  As a relatively new bowyer, did you find it a pain to work with or would you suggest it?  Thanks and you've got a lucky friend  :) .

Thanks, no coco was no problem for me. The last bow I built was mainly walnut so they both seemed to have the same amount oil and pores. You just have to take the time to shape coco because it is very dense. In the end thought it is well worth the time.
