2nd selfbow almost done Pics
« on: April 20, 2010, 12:53:00 PM »
Almost got this hickory selfbow done.  Gonna sign it and put on a couple of more coats of poly, build a new string and call done for now.
Any constructive criticism is welcome.  Gonna start on my 3rd one soon so I totally welcome for ideas on how to make the next one better.  I am wanting to give the next to my Father.
As this pic shows it took very little set.  I induced about 2 1\\2 inches of reflex and after shooting in is almost straight.

Picked a Bear hair rest and beaver hide silencers to add to it after the last two coats of poly and the string are built.
Thanks for looking
John

looks nice.i like the way you offset the grip swell there. only thing i see is the tips, they look a little thick, which can rob fps and give handshock. but i cant compare the tips to anything else in the pic so they might be ok. generally if youre going to induce reflex you should do it before tillering, because the wood gets compressed during tillering and there really is no way to fix that.

I induced the reflex way before tillering.  Then heat tempered as well, before tillering.  The tips are little thick, I might thin them out some more later on but right now I'm ready for a new project.

Congratulations on your bow. Well, if you started with 2.5in. of reflex and the bow has none you actually have 2.5 in of set but not string follow. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.  :)  Jawge

Tips are horn ordered from 3rivers.  Spent a lot of time fading them into the limb.  Before I glued them on I ground them down real thin in that area and made sure there was no square area on that end.  That way once glued on there wasn't much sanding to do to get them to match up.
Jawge, your are correct on the string follow\\set.  I got the last couple of coats of poly on last night and built a string.  Got to shoot the string in and install a nocking point and it should be ready for a hunt.
On the next I got to figure out the tip shape.  I didn't widen the string grooves out enough on this one.  The string hits the top of the groove at full draw  a little.  I would love to see some good bows in person.  All i've got to do is read books and look at pictures.

Big Country,
It is very comfortable.  I have actually gotten some good feedback on it from folks that have shot it.
