Hickory tiller check (FINISHED)
« on: May 02, 2010, 04:31:00 PM »
Hickory stave bend in handle bow. 56lbs@26  63"ntn 1 1/4" wide in handle. Still have to finish it out .Just wanted an opinion or two on the tiller. After I look at the pic ,looks like upper tip may be a little stiff. What yall say?

i agree the upper limb is stiff, mostly the last 2/3. the fade is also a bit stiff, giving most of the bend toward the center of the limb. if you have a photo editor program an easy check is to snap a straight line from fade to tip and reference the distances from the line to the limb in the picture. id work the limb tip more till it bends evenly then work the fades last as they dont need to bend much. looks good though, the full "D" shape of the bend through handle is certainly a very graceful form. good luck, keep us posted.

Upper limb needs some from the handle to midlimb.  Other than that it looks OK to me.

Finished it up today. My third bow and it turned out ok. That white hickory just looked to plain so I dressed it up a little . A friend gave me some leather dye and I tried it out, worked pretty good. The hickory would not take the wood stain worth a hoot. i used black, red and buckskin. Osage tip overlays and arrow rest. 63"NTN 54lb@26" Shoots good.

Sorry, you'll have to sand off that finish and scrape that upper limb 3 more times.  Shame too but that's what you get for not asking a final time  :)

Sweet job!

Thanks for the comments guys

bigcountry   hand shock is not bad but does feel different to shoot. This is my first bendy handle bow so it may take a little to get used to. The piece of hickory was barely big enough to get a 1 1\\4" bow out of so I thought I would try one.

Looks really great! For the next round the 4 corners up a bit to small pea size so splinters are not raised. Jawge
