I've tried 3 multi lamb parrallel all wood recurves, each progressively longer, using the best flat grained hickory I had on the backs, they all broke in tension, on the back. I would recommend using bamboo or a backing of some kind, the link you mentioned used sheet rock tape for backing, which is a fiberglass tape which is kind of thick and will show on the bow. If you want the wood to show through better you could use fiberglass cloth they sell in the automotive section, for fixing car bodies, and wet it on with a good slow cure clear epoxy. I've done this and got a nice clear almost invisible backing on wood bows. Just don't try it on the belly of the bow though does't work, it will crack badly.
