Where do you get them and what kind of wood are you shooting> I am looking for somthing in the 350-375 range and dont want poc. Thanks

I shoot tapered ash from Raptor, but mine are way heavy for you. Call Ted or email him and ask about his Sitka spruce or Douglas fir shafting. I have used Sitka from another source before and was very impressed with its straightness and flight characteristcs from my bows. I shoot ash because it is what I hunt with, I like a heavy arrow for that. Otherwise, the zinnnnngggggg of a lighter shaft is so much FUN!!

Been shooting aluminum but wood is calling me back too. How much does a tapered ash arrow weigh at about 29 bop.

Whispering Wind Hex Pine is a great shaft and Bob sells them already tapered. He can probably supply you with whatever grain weight and spine you want. Hildebrandt's Sitka Spruce are also some very good shafts that run in your weight range, but I don't know that he sells them tapered. I set up a rig and taper my own.

I get whatever wood shaft I am looking for( ash, cedar or other) and taper them myself. It doesn't take long and adds to the pleasure of making them

I have a bunch of 11/32 heavy for their spine tapers from Rogue River, Wapiti archery bought them out. The weight you listed would be under most of mine.

Your probably looking at Sitka spruce or POC I am shooting tapered Doug Fir 60-65 from Raptor Archery and my finished arrows are 570 grains thats 28.5" BOP.
Give Ted a call and see what he has around the weight you want.

I have shot hunting tapered (torpedo shaped) arrows for years-Birch, Cedar, Spruce, Doug Fir, Ash and Hickory; I agree with Ron; Cedar beats all others, and it is available in a variety of weights-just ask your supplier.

I shoot tapered Birch mostly.No steady supplier that I've come across.I tend to pick up as much as I can when I happen to luck into someone with some.

Need to go ahead and get a taper plane to do my own so I don't have to worry about finding them.

I have been shooting some tapered 80#-85#POC arrows...until this morning when 2 out of 5 split and exploded from the nock up the shaft for about 8"-10". I would assume that is the length of the taper...? Not fun.

That doesn't fit any experience I've ever had with tapered arrows. Are you saying they split when they were shot out of the bow? What size nocks?, what weight bow and what type string?

"The nocking point" sells tapered Cedars for $42 a dz.

Yes Ron, when I released the string they blew up and the two pieces landed about 5 yds away. The nock on these I believe are 5/16". The bow is a Blacktail recurve 55#@28" with a D97 string.

David, I just got off the phone talking to Paul Jalon who's been making wood arrows for over 50 years. He also said he'd never heard of anything like that happening with a tapered wood arrow.

Where did you get your shafting? Did you taper them yourself?

The only thing that Paul could think of and I think so too is that you've got some inferior shafting. There must have been a crack or some kind of internal flaw to have that happen.

Did this happen the first time you shot them? If you'd shot them before is it possible you may have hit a tree or stump that may have cracked the shaft?

I'm trying to figure out what may have caused the arrows to break because this isn't normal for a wood shaft, tapered or not.

I bought them from a source that I have bought from for alone time without any problems. They came tapered. It didn't happen until I had shot them for over 2 wks. I shoot just about every morning for a 1/2 an hour before I go to work. I only have shot these at a bag target. Thanks. Probably should look for another source of shafts...?
