little 40# Kodiak Magnum

I have a question about a small Bear bow that a friend gave me. It's greenish with white laminations and the name of it is Kodiak Magnum. It has the words "Bear Glass-Powered" on the upper limb with a silver Bear Medallion on the riser. The serial number is KU67601. Also written on it are AMO-52" and below that is 40X# with no listing of a drawlength. Does that make it a 40lb bow at 28" or 40lb plus...How old do you think it is with that serial number? Also, what would be good arrows to use for whitetails? I hunt normally with a 55 and 70lb MH Takedown but would like to try this little bow out this fall too. Is it too light at 40lb? Lastly, I put a 52" AMO string on it, which is really 48" long but it makes the brace height a whopping 9.5". Does that seem right to you, or should I try a longer string to get the brace height down some?
Thanks for your help...

It is probably 41 pounds at 28'', The brace is a little high, if you are measuring from the throat of the grip. Yep, with a two blade broadhead it is enough. We have eaten a number of deer shot with a similar bow drawn to 26''.

I would start the brace height at 7.5" and go up from there and find the bows sweet spot. Secondly, there are alot of folks that have killed deer with that poundage,,using the optimum weighted arrows,,like,,10 gpp,, and with it placed correctly on such game as deer, go for it man and you might be surprised at what that 40+ pounder will do. Oh yeah the 40X# does mean it is a bit over 40#'s.

There is a fairly wide parameter for getting into the right brace with a KM. Anywhere from about 7 1/2 to nearly 9. I've always found that just a little over 8" worked well on most I have owned. They are wonderful little bows to shoot and perfect for stands or ground blinds. Learn to drive nails with that critter and you will need not worry about poundage. Just make sure the arrows are flying perfectly, and use a cut on contact broadhead.

Thanks George...I got a pop-up ground-blind for Christmas and I'm looking forward to using my little KM with that blind. BTW, I use 125gr Magnus 2-blades for everything I shoot. Also, maybe a dumb question, but can you stretch a B-50 dacron string an inch or so by using force, like a come-a-long or something? Will it be anygood then.

No....No....No. They are plenty cheap, just get a new one. I would opt for a 12 strand as well. PM me and I can give you the e-mail of a great string maker who is very reasonable in price and can get you the strings quickly.

That is a mid-seventies bow, and will be a blast for summer stumping!
