A couple of new bows I built
« on: August 02, 2010, 02:51:00 PM »
I have only visited this site a few times but thought I would share a few pics of two bows that I just finished up the last couple of weeks.  The first is my hunting bow for this year.  It is a 64" RD longbow that is 55@27.  The riser is brazilian tulipwood footed with macassar ebony and the limbs are the same.  This is bow number four that I have built.  The second is one I just finished up last week for my brother-in-law and is number five.  It is the same length but come out to  62@28.  The riser is grey actionwood with tulipwood accent strips and limb accents on black glass.

Real nice! How did you foot together the top of the limb veneers?  I have attempted a couple of different ways with bad longterm results??  Care to share your process???

I take the boards I want together and cut them to 1.5" wide by 0.75" thick.  Then I make the cuts that I want and glue the two boards together with spacers in between if you what with smooth-on.  Then I square the board up and then cut my thin laminations with my bandsaw.  I ground these veneers down to 0.020".  Then thinner you can get them the better because then they don't really have a problem making the bend when they are that thin without coming apart.

Hey Trevor, very nice work!

How was it to work with the macassar ebony, did you take any extra precautions before glue-up?

The macassar ebony smells terrible and burns the eyes and skin so make sure you use a good respirator and glasses. The piece that I used was from gilmer woods and they had it for a while so the moisture content was around 8% in the middle. I tried a tru-oil finish on it but it never really dried very well so I sanded it of and used a super glue finish instead and then polished it up with 0000 steel wool. As far as gluing it up I just sanded the pieces with a 50 grit sanding drum to have a nice rough surface for gluing.
