IT'S FINISHED!
« on: August 09, 2010, 11:15:00 PM »
I finished my first bow.  It's my second attempt, but it's my first shootable bow.  The finished bow is made of Osage Orange, Walnut and White Maple in the riser, and Red Elm under clear glass make up the limbs.  The riser and limb tips also have some Bald Cypress accents.  The bow shoots great.  It's silent and accurate.  The specs are 64" Hybrid D&R Longbow; 48# @ 28".  It's no speed demon at 136 fps with a 660 gr. arrow.  Oh, and it's my first flemish string.  Here's some pictures:

That's an impressive bit of work, there.  I especially like the narrowness of the limbs.  Did you shoot that group or stick 'em in for the photo?

Keep doing whatever it is you're doing; you got the mojo.

Nice!

Gosh, that is a good job! Don't get down about the speed, your talking 13.75 gpp. Most guys that tout 180fps and higher are shooting less than 10gpp. If you can get 175+ fps with 10gpp you are right there in the average to compare to normal testing results. That is not bad for such a heavy arrow. That's not slow. Shoot a 480 grn arrow and see what you get!

I agree with Jason, that's not bad at all.  I'm happy for you!  Nothing quite like building your own.  Now go kill something with it!

Nice looking bow! And I agree with the rest on your speed. With an arrow that heavy you'll still bring home the bacon at 136 fps

Hey, Ishmael, looks like you've become quite the bower, as well as the bowman. (GEN 21:20 reference)
That is an excellent first bow.

what is the width of your limbs at the widest points, and did you use a straight pyramid taper for them?

Great job D.A. That's a very fine bow. Don't worry about the speed, with those heavy arrows that's not that bad. I'm sure if everybody would use 13grain/lbs for testing then the numbers would be a lot less impressive.
