selfbow finishes AND handles pics please
« on: August 17, 2010, 12:01:00 AM »
Finishing up a selfbow.  My 24 year old sister died about 3 weeks ago and this selfbow that I had been working on I am going to dedicate in her memory.

Looking for nice way to do the handle/wrap/rest and a great looking finish.

Her nickname was Bobbi-Doo.  I have no idea where that came from but that is the name I am giving this bow and I am going to laminate her photo on the bottom limb.

It turned out 64" and 75#@27" with 1.5" string follow.  Thanks for any suggestions.

Here's one I did on a slightly bulbous handle.  I did a Tennis racquet style wrap.  I find it very comfortable and pleasing to my eye.  I just used a nice thick piece of leather and used my belt sander to bevel the edges.  I used a small wedge of leather as a rest.  And I used a scrap piece of snake skin for my strike plate.
By the way I think that's a beautiful gesture to honor your sister's memory.  I'm sorry to hear of her passing.

this is one of my latest. 52#@ 28" Osage with rawhide backing. deer skin laced handle. the leather is folded real thick at the top so it makes a shallow rest.

Justin ...sorry to hear about your SISTER. I lost a great friend two weeks ago. I made a bow in his memory too. Just thought you might like it. I put a cut-out off his funeral card on it. Turned out nice... God bless ya and your sister. She'll be hunting with you this year just like "DOC" will with me ..sincerly , Jeff

here's one I did recently on a bamboo backed osage.  It is a laced leather grip with an elk ivory rest from an elk that my father took before he passed.  Im really sorry to hear about your sister.

Thank you for all the kind replies.  Her death has left me numb.  I enjoy the photos and the grip ideas.

God  bless all of you.
