SHINTO "SAW RASP" for working down bow belly's THE BEST
« on: August 21, 2010, 12:09:00 PM »
Ever try a SHINTO  "saw rasp"  Its what I only use to work down selfbow bellies. It has revesable sides One coarse and one fine. The coarse really takes off wood fast. Fine gets it down nice too. Its like a bunch of hack saw blades together.. I love this fine tool. Made in Japan.

Google it ..You can get it for around $32.00 ..its well worth it!!

That's what I use. Although, I have the model without the auxilary grip. Those things chew wood like a rabid beaver, but fully controlable.

I've wanted one for a few years now.  Did y'all get them from Japanwoodworker?

How do they compare to a ferrier's rasp?

I got mine at a local specialty woodworking store.
I'd have to say they remove wood better than a farrier's rasp.

You can also make saw rasps from used bandsaw blades.  They aren't as good as the real deal but they sure chew up the wood.  I just break them into 10" pieces and stack them together and then use duct tape to hold them and forma a handle.  6 TPI blades work best.

I still like my Nicholson cabinet rasps better but not by much.
Take a kid hunting!
