Osage for limbs?
« on: February 14, 2008, 09:35:00 AM »
Can anyone give me there thoughts on using Osage as a limb wood in a laminated glass bow. Is there any disadvantages to it. I know it makes and awesome heavy riser wood but wondered about it for a great limb wood. Thanks Flint

Nice!

Are those the fur tracers on your arrows??Really makes them stand out.Thought about trying them but wasn't sure how well they worked or wether they affected arrow flight/speed.Any comments on your experience with them?

Those are feather tracers.  They don't do a thing to flight.  Only "problem" I have had is a slight vision blocking/blurring when I sight down the shaft at full draw. I could trim them some, but I like them the way they are.

There is one other slight a "disadvantage".  When you are stumping or doing a 3-d shoot with some friends, make sure you are the last to shoot.  They make for too good of a target...

If you like to shoot heavy arrows go with osage. It likes to throw them heavy arrows.

hi heydeerman,
the story about heavy wood in the limps(in this case osage) throw a heavy weight arrow better is just an "old wife talking".
no offence tho.
just because a limp wood is heavy doesnt make it a good performer.
doesnt matter if the arrow ist light or heavy.
sad that,i am making my first glaslambow with osage right now.
dang this wood ist BEATY.

The osage in the Shrew Gold bows is no thicker than about .050" on each side, and the rest is bamboo.  Works just fine!

Shantam...you calling me a girl?

My experience has been better cast of heavy arrows outta osage. The osage Abbot I just sold was a good example. I also have an osage Wes Wallace takedown that I can say the same of. Thats my story and I'm stickin to it.

i dont call you a girl.
Period.
i just dont think its that simple.
a bow is either good performing or not.
doesnt matter the weigth of the arrow nor the weight of the corelam.

Here's one for ya....

I dont know about function, but it sure does look good. This is a Thunderstick Mag, shoots real well too. Besides, it's the fiberglass that's doing 88% of the work anyway.

In my opinion, Sassafrass makes the best limb wood.  That being said, I have two "main" bows that are identical designs with 3#'s draw weight difference.  One is Sassafrass and one is osage and I would guess there MAY be 4 or 5 feet per second difference.  I think most of a bows performance comes from design and not the wood.  I've found that to be true with practically all the bows I've made.  Just my opinion.

Baretracks

I just got my rosewood/osage Thunderstick mag today.  Haven't shot it yet but it looks awesome.

What riser is yours made from???  It looks much more red than mine does.

this bow seems to shoot 'well enough for me'  :)

its custom made by a friend.  osage and paduk  limbs, osage paduk and grey actionwood riser.

all in all I do prefer bamboo cored limbs with maybe a veneer of something-or-other...

Rick Welch recently used it as veneers over bamboo on my Dakota Hunter and I really like it a lot!  Check it out.
