Bingham's videos?
« on: August 23, 2010, 03:17:00 PM »
Are the Bingham's instructional bowbuilding videos good? Up to date? Any insights appreciated.

Thanks!

You can learn alot from them. Thats how I started. I started with a recurve tape and now I only build longbows. Now I learn from trial and error. Ive made about 90 bows so far and have learned much. Go for it.  Mark

I'm thinking of giving it a whirl as a hobby, then maybe starting a business in a few years when I retire.

This is terrible! My Bingham's videos and all 4 volumes of the Bowyer's Bible arrived in today's mail, and I'm a hundred miles away at work. Oh the injustice of earning a living...it takes sooo much time away from the important stuff.  :D

the binghams videos leave something to be desired. fact. ive seen more informitave build a longs here on trad gang than in an entire video from binghams. dont get me wrong binghams will start you on the right track but there are some other tricks and skills you need to produce a good bow not to mention you need to learn from your own mistakes and teach yourself to know what not to do.i myself want to build another glass laminated bow, and if i havent read some of the build alongs here i most likely wouldnt attempt it. look up a build from fellow  tg'er hera. awesome build a long. also from kennym. he has had an awesome build, not to mention building six bows with different formulas with a critique on each. marty thompson has also done a few builds here too that are awsome jason westbrock has also done a build that i liked that was very informitive.. there is a wealth of informatiuon here that you cant get from binghams videos i would ask questions there are some folks here that are willin to help the d.i.y. folks do some searches here . i promise you wont be dissappointed, ruddy

I must agree here. I've bought every book I could get my hands on, but this site has still taught me more than any book  :)
It DOES, however, help if you can go have a look at someone's setup and maybe observe a glue-up. It just takes away a lot of doubt.

After watching the video on longbow building, I can see what y'all are talking about. I'll likely visit Great Plains and another bowyer's shop who lives fairly close before attempting anything...especially after reading the 'bow blow up' thread! The build alongs here are priceless.

You can find everything you need to know about building a good bow on this site. All you have to do is search a bit and ask lots of questions. There are many good folks here that are willing to share their wisdom and guide you through the process.

I'm sure it would have taken me ten times longer to get where i am now without this site.
