Horse Bow & Recurve???????
« on: August 29, 2010, 06:13:00 PM »
I just finish my first long bow ( will post pics soon). But really want to make a horse bow or recurve & was wondering if their was a really in depth guide to building either one online.
Also is it possible to build either one without fiberglass lamination, if so could you tell me how, thanks!

Instead of using fiberglass you would use horn on the belly and sinew on the back

Thomas Duvernay has a DVD on building the Korean composite bow.

Jeff Schmidt has a DVD "Building the Asiatic Composite Bow.

Adam Karpowicz has a book "Ottoman Turkish bows, manufacture and design."

I have all three, and Karpowicz' book is best of the lot.

Thx for the info, what i really want is the look of a traditional horse bow but was wondering if you could build it with just wood laminations of solid walnut, cherry, red oak, and possibly hickory. Do you think that would be possible if so what would you suggest to use of the woods i listed?

These bows can be made with all wood(and boo) but they are highly stressed and most of the woods you mentioned wouldn't be appropriate for back or belly with the possible exception of hickory for the backing.
Make the most of all that comes and the least of all that goes!

if you look up native american plains bows they are sort of similar to an Asiatic composite bow but were made from one piece of wood, with the reflex bent in by heat. the plains bow is actually a project im thinking about doing sometime.

If you are trying to build a horsebow out of wood I would suggest using juniper for its compression strengh

Hi Preston,

There was a build-along on here, where Nick (Dutchwarbow) built a bamboo backed bamboo recurve. He also had plans some where for a bamboo backed bamboo horsebow/static recurve, but I can't seem to find them.

Do a search under Dutchwarbow, I think the topic header is 'who wants to see a bbb build-along?' or something to that effect......
