inherited sinew-backed osage. Help finishing?
« on: October 04, 2010, 10:31:00 AM »
Hello!

I just inherited a partially done sinew-backed osage bow.  The bow came to me still tied up in it's sinewing jig.  It has two courses of sinew done, but the man who started it wasn't able to finish wrapping one of the flipped tips and the 2nd course lifted off.  He was a mentor to my buddy and I'd love to be able to finish it for him as a Christmas gift.  How would I go about repairing this?  I was tempted to soak it in warm water to remove the whole backing, but that might be too drastic!  I've never done a sinew job before and this would be a great learning experience.

Thanks a lot,
~John

A heat gun should heat it enough to remove the sinew.

If you can add glue under the portion that has raised and then wrap it that may do the trick, too.

If you can, please post a couple pictures one top view one side view.

I would not use a heat gun this may cook the sinew.

If the only section raised is the flipped tip, then you could try to re glue, this may or may not work.

I would probably just remove the portion that raised and then lightly sand the area then resize with hide glue and lay down new sinew then wrap.

I've only done a few Sinew bows so please take with a grain of salt

Dave
