Back in the shop again... ( pics of the finished bow )
« on: October 11, 2010, 03:47:00 PM »
Ok, after the summer break it's time to get back in the shop and start a new one. It's going to be a 64" longbow with a mild d/r-profile. I'm going to use cocobolo and hard maple for the limbs and cocobolo and karelian birch for the riser.

Here are the lams and the riser block I got from Kenny, they are awesome as usual...

The riser block with the karelian birch stripes...

Always good to see your work. That riser is looking good and should go well with the lams you got.

Hey John, I would like to go on faster myself, but there are some things in life like family, work, social life that keep you from doing what's important  ;-) And BTW what are all these nice bows for if you don't use them from time to time.

Spent some time in the shop today. First I sanded the riser until the fade outs were perfect...

Then I spliced the lams for the back of the bow together and prepared the glass and the lams for glue up...

And finally I glued the bow up. The Cocobolo lams look absolutely awesome. Thanks again Kenny for those fantastic wood you sent me !

Went into the shop, took the bow out of the form and had a peek at the lams...

The glue lines at the fade outs look very nice...

That is some very nice looking wood. I'm excited to see this one come to life.

Yesterday evening Phil, Steph and myself met to work on our bows. This is how far we have been so far with our work.

We started with marking the centerline of the bow and drawing the shape of the limbs...

After that task is accomplished it's time to cut out bow after bow...

Phil is inspecting the limbs...

After a bit of sanding it's time to string her for the first time and to check if the draw weight is going to be correct...

The draw weight is still a few pounds to high but that's ok. I will loose them with the fine tuning and final sanding of the limbs, so that it will end up pretty much spot on. The limbs need to bend a bit more towards the end of the limbs. So i will narrow the tips a little bit until i'm happy with it.

Ok, I found some time to continue with the bow. Glued on the tips and the overlay. They are made of white phenol and a piece of cocobolo.

Before glueing them on I rough the surface with sanding paper and clean it with acetone.

First I glue on the phenol stripes and after that the cocobolo. I use super glue to glue them on, so I have to wait about a minute and can glue on the cocobolo right after that.

With the overlay it's exactly the same procedure.

I hope that I can shape the tips and the overlays tomorrow and then it's time to shoot her for the first time... :-)
