I tried those on my fishing bow, not the best answer. They are self tapping sort of. They don't cut out a chip like a real tap would. They work by deforming the material they thread into. On soft woods they might work OK, but on harder woods like most risers the wood is too hard and just doesn't deform like that. The ones I used ended up chipping the wood of my riser. Nothing a little epoxy couldn't fix, but not cosmetically appealing. I didn't care too much since it was on a 50 year old recurve that gets beat up pretty good while hunting carp. I'd not recommend them for this use.
