First Bow Complete
« on: November 14, 2010, 03:50:00 PM »
Okay, so it's only a kids bow, but I learned a bunch in the process.  It became a gift for my daughter's second birthday.  She loves it and shoots it well with a little help from dad.

I made the bow out of a 1/4" red oak slat and did a laminated handle with red oak and poplar.  Brown paper backed and finish in tru-oil.  Finished her off with a flemish twist string.  Arrows are made from birch dowels.  Next on deck is a red oak board bow for myself.  Enjoy the pics.

Very good work...I am in the process of making my first red oak board bow also.  Pyramid style.  Hope it turns out well.

Looks good and all, but where's the picture of your little princess shooting that beauty.
Your ahead of most of us. For your first bow you hit what you aimed at, most of us miss and end up with a kids bow. Is it another 4est inspired design?

Thank you all for the nice remarks.  Yes, this bow was inspired by 4est's build along.  I'll try to get some pictures of my little girl pulling it back.  I haven't checked the weight, but I'd guess its in the ballpark of 15-20lbs.

Yes, that little board had pretty straight grain.  If I remember right, it only had one run off.  I decided to back it anyways to remove any worry of it blowing up on my little girl.  The paper back came out a little rippily, but I think it adds to it's character.

Great looking little bow there. The attention to detail is what I think seperates good bows from great. Your picture taking doesn't hurt either. If I was you I would skip the boards now and ger some osage.

Thanks, DVS.  I'm definitely tempted to work a stave.  Of course, I guess thats what comes from reading the first three volumes of TBB.  Do you know of any good places to get a decent stave?  I'm guessing I'll have to mail order one.
