backing my shorty pyramid. suggestion needed...
« on: December 03, 2010, 03:26:00 PM »
ok so I got everything profiled last night and let me just say, 53" is SHORT!

I have been reading , and I see people get 30# @ 28" on a 48" board bow (probably hickry ), so I know I'm not that crazy. I also heard of the ishi/pyramid but can't find any info on it.

so I'm thinking of backing the white oak , so that I can keep it hunting weight (45#) at 25-28" draw...

I was pondering ipe, but haven't worked with it at all.sinew was a thought as well, but its winter here in ohio now...

I was also planning on adding the glued recurve tips ala 4est, but wondered if brush nocks would cancel out the tips?

also thoughts on just boiling the tips and then doing brush nocks ...

thanks guys!

a post on paleo. the guy did a 48" pyramid out of hickry and said it was 30# @ 28" ... don't recall him backing it.

as far as ipe, I hadn't really chose it, it was just an option .

as for the levers, I saw someone did a short bow with glues on siyahs I think they called it...

yes, the shape is all cut out , 1/2" tips , 2 1/2" @ fades.

if I back with hickry , what about adding some length to the tips of the backing?

thanks jawge. sinew is a thought, but I  haven't really looked into it seriously . its averaging about 30 degrees outside , and I don't know if sinew or hide glue has any smell or anything , but I'm sure  the in-laws wouldn't like it...

Yes, hova, Tim Baker I think drew a 48 in hickory to 28 in. But a bow overdrawn like that is not a bow I'd want to take hunting. I'd hate to have it break in the field. The big thing is I don;t have Tim's skills.  :)  Jawge

I hear ya!

I looked at some siyahs and I just don't know if that's what I'm looking for... the molegabat looks like it would work, very simply.

what about doing recurve tips like the BAL, but extending them a bit?

looks like she might get sinewed...maybe...

i was thinking of wrapping it , and coating that with either poly resin (dont really want to do this)

i was wondering about maybe sinking the end of the recurve tip into the end of the bow tip , and angle it up a little , but that cuts into the back grain , and leaves me with a wedge underneath the tip. i think at brace height it would be sitting where the nock would normally be.

i wondered about the strength of a v splice , and i may need to look into it more , but i was thinking maybe of doing the recurve tip , extended a bit , and narrowed a good bit , but left a little thick , but then instead of just 6" static tips or 3" if im really lucky , id have a lot more due to the extension part...

i am looking for bows that have different combinations , and it is kinda hard to find em.  i mean i know unless you're specifically copying something , that technically you have your own individual thing,  but i like ideas.

i am going to google a bit about spicing in non working tips. and sinew. i know i dont want siyahs , or string risers... i need to get a new sketchbook so i can draw up some tip configs...

I'm hoping it doesn't matter how many bows he's made. I'm making a power table with lots of interesting errors so far, and if you all have made tables, and made errors such as I, I'd like to know how you came about your "fix". I'm very interested in bows and arrows from trees and branches rather than from dowels and boards...

Keep the questions coming I say....

lol...you had to ask...one  :D

I looked around last night and decided on siyahs like on 4est's osage . I'm going to do em basically the same as his. but with a 3" glue joint , wrapped very similar to curt's beauty.

v splicing and z splicing is beyond the small realm of my hacksaw and buck knife...

rattus: I don't think number built really has anything at all to do about luck...lol..

its ironic you mention trees and branches ...I literally just walked in the door from ...harvesting...a black locust  for the swap.

Today's to do list...
 Remove tree from woods    -check
Debark arrowshafts collected 2 weeks ago
 Mess around with my tips.

Hova......

I didn't mean that as a dig. Sorry if it came across like that. It didn't take me long in my bowbuilding to realize that bow design takes many years of trial and error. I went back to the proven (easy builds) to gain experience and took some of the frustration out of the mix. Hang in there and Good luck on your next project.

james , I didn't take offense at all. the wife said the same thing. she saw my disappointment after all the work I put into my last break, and said keep it simple , and keep it enjoyable.

I've cut & split my locust , and its twisted...might make a good boat prop...

may end up doing a BBI instead, for the swap...

off to cut up my siyahs ...wish me luck...
