Cleaning up a recurve?
« on: December 15, 2010, 05:51:00 PM »
I recently acquired a damon howatt monterey.  it's a beautiful bow, but there are some "smudges" on it.  How can I touch up the finish without messing anything up?  I've seen you can clean it with alcohol and re-seal it with something.  Help me out fellas.  Thanks.

Depending on how original you want to keep it, you could always refinish the whole thing. Its easy enough and doesnt take that long. I doubt you will be able to spot fix and still keep her sharp. I may be wrong, but the stain will be hard to replicate. I vote for a total refinish!

Depends on what look your going for. Going to hunt with it?
Could start with a scotch brite to scuff up (de-glaze) the finish to see if it comes out even. Maybe you'll like it that way.
From there it will take sandpaper to really re-finish.

You sell it to me and I will take care of it.

Perhaps yoiu can elaborate on smudges or show us some pics. Its not that easy to refinish a M0nterray since they are rosewood and require special sealing. A lot of finishes will not dry.If its not too bad the best thing to do would be to hit the entire bow real light with 400 and give it a couple of coats of tru oil over the old finish. That way you do not have to re seal the wood. God Bless you and good luck , Steve
