TD longbow:First attempt(with pics)
« on: December 17, 2010, 07:58:00 PM »
My first crack at a TD longbow.Every thing was my own design and one big guess at stack thickness. Came out almost perfect 62" 53@28".Tried to hit 60" and low to mid 50s.Black glass with cherry & sassafras cores.East Ind. Rosewood on the tips and wedge caps, riser is maple and pau ferro.
Great shooter with no hand shock.
Tell me what you guys think of the full draw pic.I used 8" wedges on this one and I'm not sure if I should use a 10" wedge or just throw a PL in with the 8" on the next on. Or maybe just leave it alone.

Thanks for looking guys. All comments, good or bad,are welcome.

Looks great, wouldn't mind having one like it for my collection. One day I will probably build one, but for now I will stick to my 2 long bows I made.

Looks really nice to me! Great job! Tip overlays look nice but a word of caution: Be extra carefull about bumping the limb tip on the ground or when you are sliding the bow into a bow sock. It's real easy to pop the overlay off if the end of the limb hits the ground when the overlays extend past the lams like that.  I popped one of mine off trying to get my bow from behind the seat of my nissan hardbody. I had to bend the limbs to get the bow back there and when I was pulling it out, I put backwards force on the tip and the overlay popped right off!  Easy fix but frustrating. Mike

That is a beauty! Did you use any tapers in the stack? The 10" wedge would push the bend a little further out from the riser.

I think it looks good,if I were gonna do anything,I'd slip a p-lam in it out 3-4 inches past the 8.25 wedge. Wouldn't have to be a really heavy p-lam to stiffen it up just a bit at the "fades"
Stay sharp, Kenny.

I agree with the other guys, dang nice looking bow.  Don't know about the p/l or not the full draw pictures always look good to me.  You could always try them on the next one and compare the results.

Thanks for the input fellas.
Trux:I put a total taper of .003.Under the glass I put a .001 per on the back and .002 per on the belly with a parallel in the center.I also put in an 8" tip wedge,.040 @.005 per.

As far as far as a pl or longer wedge, I think I'll try a pl first.By looking at the pic I only want to move the bend another inch or two away from the fades.I need to shoot it more before I make my final decision cause I don't want to fix something that aint broke.

That was my take too. If anything. Like you say, shoot it first and if you like how she handles, maybe leave it alone!

Nice job bro!!

Those are some of the nicest tips I've seen. The rest of the bow looks good too.

Since you are already pondering the p-lam, you know you will have to try it-lol- I'm a fan of them- bends nicely where you have it now.
