2 New R/D Longbows
« on: December 31, 2010, 02:50:00 AM »
I am getting real close to done on my next 2 bows. One for me and one for my 12 yr old son.

I borrowed a form from Greg (Kenny M's 58 - 60" r/d design) and used it on both bows. Greg's forms are as nicely built as his bows are, which is saying something. Greg also helped me by making the combo taper laminations this design uses for both bows.

I was shooting for 35lbs @ 28" for my sons bow. I cut it to 1.25" wide at the fades tapering to 1/2" at the tips. It was drawing 28lbs as a 60" bow so I pikes it to 57" and it is now 33lbs. The bow draws just fine out to about 28" in it's shorter configuration. This one is black glass, maple lams, and charcoal actionwood riser. I really like these colors.

My bow is 60" and around 50lbs @ 28" I don't have a scale and haven't had a chance to check it yet. This one is face grain elm with maple cores, desert camo actionwood riser with a maple swoop in it. The riser is a little busy looking, but I'm hoping it will be okay once I get some finish on it.

Thanks for looking, I will post up some pics when I get the finish on these two.

I would like to point out that these are Lane's second and third bows, he's going to be a pro by the fourth one. Seriously, look at the fades, they are flawless and that handle flare isn't easy to do. Also, there isn't a gap between the butt ends of the lams. Very nice workmanship. I would never post a photo of my third bow, it's buried in a closet.
I didnt miss, thats right where I was aiming

Great Bows!!! Do you laminate those type with Titebond III or epoxy and heat box?
Step lightly, and shoot a trad bow.

Thanks for the comments, these bows are epoxied in a heat box. I don't think woodglue will bond fiberglass?

Greg has really accelerated my learning curve, sure is nice to live close to a generous expert.

Kenny, this design of yours is really good. Both of these bows shoot good. The 57" bow pinches my fingers a little at full draw (29.5") but it shoots nice still. The 60" bow feels great at my draw length and doesn't start stacking for at least several inches beyond my draw. I'm sold on this design. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a little shorter bow. I shot it til my fingers hurt yesterday, I still have finish sanding to do on both, but we both have to quit playing with them first. Maybe I need a rule for myself about not shooting them til they get finished?

I would say some of you should check out the bow swap for 2011. It would give you a reason to make a new bow plus what you get will most likly be differnt then your norm. Just saying.
Happy new year,
Kelly

Lane, I figured at 58" it would still accomodate a 28" draw nicely,60" should be good for your draw. Can't wait to see some finish on em!

Lane.............

I always "break-in" a bow before I put any finish on it, that is how it is done or not.

Great job on both bows

Taking me a little while to finish these, if only life had a pause button. Here are a couple of finish in progress pics, I'm using tru-oil and spray poly to finish these.
