Locust that has been cut for a few years?
« on: December 31, 2010, 03:52:00 PM »
A buddy said he has several locust logs that have been cut for a few years. They are in a pile beside a road on his land. He told me I could have them if I wanted them. Should they be OK for bow making or should I leave them there. Thanks, Don

Don I got some black locust logs out of a guys yard about a year ago. He told me the tree blew over in a storm a couple of years earlier. The bark fell off when i loaded em in the truck and the sapwood had a lot of checks in it. I tried goin down below the sapwood but the checks were really deep. There was no bug damage to the wood though.

I started out building bows by buying BL fence posts off a farmer I hunted on.
Split them and see it there good.Rot or bug holes.

Locust is almost as rot resistant as osage so a few years on the ground shouldn't be a problem. Around here there is a grub that lives in live locust trees(unlike osage grubs attack after tree is dead). These grub holes don't ruin the wood necessarily like the osage grubs do(not as extensive) but carpenter ants like to move in. They can't really bother the "sound" wood but are a neuscience to deal with. They are dormant now but will awaken when the wood comes in a warm house. If they are present you should see them when you split the logs.

Yes like said, only way to find out is tear in to them.

Around here, used alot for fencing. My neighbor has a split rail fence about 100 yds long. Some nice splits in there!

Told him if he every tears out, let me know!

Best to you with them!
