color accent

just a quick question. has anyone added fabric color accents to bows/risers by simply laying down some tb3 , the fabric , and more tb3?

im thinking of adding some color to my current bend thru the handle bow , in between the main body and brush nocks. i was also considering a hickory backing , and wondered if an accent in between the slats would be a bad idea...

isn't that what "micarta" is? i guess micarta is a generic term though. but using different resins to impregnate a wide variety of materials under pressure to create a laminate. so my guess is why wouldn't it work. give it a try. maybe do an experiment with a dummy riser so to speak.

im not talking thick like phenolic or micarta. ive done that before. not talking about using resin either. done that.


i guess youre right though , its not really any different whether its one layer or 50...

Can't you use fabric for backing?  Why wouldn't it also work as an accent?  Maybe would depend on what type of material is used.

that what i was thinking. i havent  used fabric or anything for that matter as a backing.


i had some ideas last night , and as long as i use something like silk , it should work just fine.

This is a bow I made for the girlfriend of a young friend on mine. The leopard print design is animal print tissue paper. It is purely decorative.
 

And this it tiger print tissue paper. Unfortunately this bow didn't survive..I mean this is my takedown model! d;^)
 
She was such a pretty bow...

thats awesome . i was thinking of an accent in between wood laminations , sort of like on a glass bow. i just wasnt sure how the backing would adhere to the accent piece.


my thread wrap idea was kind of like you see on pool cues. only different...

That one was gonna be my hunting bow last year. Had over a thousand shots through her and late one night I picked her up and pulled her 1" too far!  Those late night flings will get you every time. d;^)
  You shouldn't have any problem with a backing and accent piece between lams.

I have a knife maker friend that layered denim(old blue jeans)with epoxy and made handle scales,turned out right nice.

dc , thats micarta , i have done the same for a couple old knives , but i was more concerned with the lam adhesion over the fabric.

as long as the glue impregnates the fabric it shouldn't be a problem, but i don't think you'll get the contrast you are looking for without going thick enough to end up being micarta anyways

im not looking for contrast , think of it as aa pinstripe.

im thinknig of green silk right now , and ill probably go three layers thick between lams , and two  layers between each of the overlay layers.


i know what you mean though , to me micarta is with epoxy , im looking to use tb3. i just call it composite...
